Toriana did not speak on the way to the Krams homestead. She could not form intelligible sentences in her fractured mind. She wondered where exactly she was going, what she would be doing, how she would escape and why her father had done this. What had she done to deserve this? Was it her fault at all? She feared there would always be more questions than answers.
She knew that she would likely never speak to her father again. If she was unable to find a means of escape, she had no doubt he would secure her freedom at the end of a year as promised. She could not understand why she still clung to the fact that he would keep his word. He had betrayed her in a way that she could never have imagined. He had stripped her of everything she had ever fought for. Any sense of self or security was snatched away in an instant.
Although Toriana hardly noticed, no one else in the truck spoke much either. She occasionally caught them exchanging glances with each other. She saw a look of concern, as if they were worried how she might react. It was little consolation, under the circumstances, but she enjoyed being able to make them nervous. They had good reason to be. When they first embarked, she had entertained the notion of incapacitating the driver and running. It was a short-lived plan. She knew that she was overpowered. There were four men in the vehicle; two old and two young. The agility, strength, and stamina of the young men were not her primary concern. She feared the experience and precision of the two older men. They had spent decades on the hunt and had honed their skills in tracking.
It was difficult to swallow that a werewolf would âtear apartâ one of their own, as they had threatened, but she did not underestimate the ferocity with which these men might protect their pack. Her only option, she concluded, was to find an opportunity to disappear. Whether she would wait for it or create it, she had not yet decided.
She was shaken alert when they crossed the cattle guard at the entrance of the homestead. She had never been here. Strangely, she had never known anyone outside of the Krams and Kleine packs who had. The cedars around the cattle guard created something akin to a corridor. It went on for several hundred feet before opening up to a nearly barren field. They continued to travel a well-worn dirt path that skirted the pasture in an easterly direction. She could see lights in the distance and assumed that they were an indication of her destination. She paid close attention to the route, trying to mentally annotate each turn and clump of trees along the way. The county had fallen into darkness by then, making it no easy task. She wanted to survey the stars for direction, just as her father had taught her to do but could not angle herself toward the window for the young men situated on either side.
